At East Lothian Council, we’re getting in touch with local businesses to let them know about an upcoming opportunity to share views on a potential Visitor Levy for East Lothian.
Over the coming weeks, we will begin engaging with local businesses, organisations, residents, and visitors to explore what a Visitor Levy scheme could look like for our area. This is an early-stage, exploratory process, no decisions have been made, and any future proposals would be shaped by the findings of this engagement and reported to councillors in early 2026.
What is a Visitor Levy?
A Visitor Levy (sometimes called a “tourist tax”) is a small charge that local authorities can apply to overnight accommodation, such as hotels, B&Bs, self-catering units, and campsites. The income raised must be reinvested locally to support tourism and enhance the visitor experience, for example, through better infrastructure, local services, events, or support for tourism businesses. More information can be found here Visitor Levy Information for Industry.
In the coming days, local businesses will receive an email invitation with a link to a survey from 56 Degree Insight, an independent research company working on behalf of the Council. The short survey will seek views on:
Feedback will help shape the development of any future proposals, ensuring they reflect East Lothian’s priorities and needs.
If you haven't received an email, you can complete the survey below. The survey closes on 30th November 2025.
