Dunbar Outdoor Learning: Cultivating Curiosity and Sustainability in East Lothian

Nestled within the walled garden and private woodlands of Dunbar, Dunbar Outdoor Learning (formerly Dunbar Private Nursery) is redefining early years education through a fully outdoor, eco-conscious approach. Founded by Debbie Bligh, whose career in childcare spans nearly a decade as a childminder and mother of three, the nursery was born from a deep understanding of the growing demand for childcare in the area. Having moved to Dunbar just before the COVID-19 lockdown, Debbie quickly recognised the town’s expanding young population and the pressing need for more childcare.

Rather than being discouraged by initial setbacks, Debbie embraced the opportunity to launch an outdoor nursery from the outset. Officially opened on 20th May 2025, Dunbar Outdoor Learning offers a unique learning environment for children aged 3 to 5, with plans underway to welcome two-year-olds in the near future. The nursery accommodates up to 32 children per day and operates entirely off-grid, powered by solar panels and rechargeable batteries. Every aspect of the nursery, from compostable toilets to eco-friendly materials, reflects a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Children at the nursery enjoy immersive experiences in nature, from woodland play to beach picnics via e-bike excursions. Activities such as conker soap-making and seasonal crafts foster alternative learning and hands-on exploration. The outdoor model has resonated strongly with the Dunbar community, which has rallied around the nursery with volunteer support and a shared enthusiasm for upcycling and reuse. Parent feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the nurturing staff and the transformative impact of outdoor learning on their children’s confidence and wellbeing.

The nursery’s success is also a testament to the support available through East Lothian Council’s Economic Development services. Debbie credits Business Gateway East Lothian, particularly advisor Irene Ramsay, as instrumental in guiding her through the two-year journey to launch. From planning advice to ongoing mentorship, the support has been consistent and deeply valued. East Lothian Investments Ltd and the Council’s Planning department also played key roles in helping the nursery navigate challenges and accelerate its development.

Looking ahead, Dunbar Outdoor Learning is preparing to expand with a second site at John Muir Country Park. This new location will cater to children aged 0–12 through holiday clubs, afterschool care, and a pioneering training centre for outdoor learning. Debbie also envisions a community hub to support homeschooling families, addressing a gap in flexi-schooling provision and offering guidance for outdoor education.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Debbie’s advice is clear:

“Start by contacting Business Gateway. Their expertise and connections can help shape your vision and steer you toward success. And don’t underestimate the value of building a network – visit other businesses and learn from those who’ve already done it.”

Dunbar Outdoor Learning is more than a childcare provider, it’s a community-led initiative setting the pace for sustainable education in East Lothian.
