Carfrae Farm: Tradition, Sustainability and Rural Hospitality

Nestled at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills, Carfrae Farm has been a family-run enterprise since 1933, now managed by the third generation of the Gibson family, with invaluable contributions from both the second and fourth generations. Covering 830 acres, the farm has a proud history of arable farming, producing wheat, barley, oats, oilseed rape, and peas, while maintaining a connection to livestock through summer grazing and winter housing in partnership with neighbouring farmers.

In recent years, Carfrae Farm has diversified into rural tourism and retail. In 2018, three traditional cottages were transformed into luxury self-catering accommodations, complete with hot tubs and an outdoor sauna. These cottages offer guests a chance to experience the beauty of the East Lothian countryside, with optional activities provided by local partners.

The farm’s latest venture, the Carfrae Farm Shop, opened in 2022, showcasing a wide array of local and Scottish produce in a beautifully converted barn. This addition quickly gained recognition, earning a “Highly Commended” award in the 2024 Countryside Alliance Awards for Best Village Shop in Scotland.

Carfrae Farm embodies the perfect blend of tradition, innovation, and community. As dedicated custodians of this land, the Gibson family takes pride in sharing their knowledge, heritage, and warm hospitality with every visitor.
